Let it begin.

Utah Jazz v. Denver Thuggets

Oct. 28 @ 8:30pm

ESPN

I think the Nuggets are overrated this year and, even though we've got injuries, I see the Jazz pulling this one out on the road.

pilmer

bill simmons wrote a bit about george karl this week.

Quote:
George Karl
The best five coaching years of Karl's career, along with the following year.

1987 Warriors: 42-40, lost in second round to eventual champs
1988 Warriors: 16-48, fired

1993 Sonics: 55-27, lost Game 7 of Western Conference finals
1994 Sonics: 63-19, lost in first round to No. 8 seed (first time ever)

1996 Sonics: 64-18, lost in NBA Finals
1997 Sonics: 57-25, lost in second round

2000 Bucks: 52-30, lost Game 7 of Eastern Conference finals
2001 Bucks: 41-41, missed playoffs

2009 Nuggets: 54-28, lost in Western finals to eventual champs
2010 Nuggets: ???????

(Translation: You don't want to ride the George Karl Train after a good year. He gets snippy, the players tire of him, bad things happen, he spends a lot of time standing on the sidelines with his hands in his pockets and that, "Look, I don't care anymore, if they want to go down in flames doing it their way, that's fine, I'll just stand over here" look on his face. Keep your guard up, Nuggets fans.)

I'm worried about the injury problems, that and a pretty tough November schedule, wouldn't surprise me if the Jazz got off to a kind of slow start. Though who knows, maybe Wesley Matthews surprises everyone.

Looks like the beginning of this year might look like the beginning of last year?

I can't tell you how excited i am to see what this kid brings to the team. He definitely out shined all the scrubs the preseason. He plays hard, plays good D, and sounds like a solid human being. We're lucky we stumbled upon him given the Suton debacle. His game reminds me of Shandon Anderson.

I read up some. I guess Matthews beat out Ronald Dupree for that spot. I had previously read other stuff that said Dupree is badass and was going to make the team this year, but Matthews outperformed him I guess. What is he? A 2? A 3?

Suton got cut, along with two scrubs I'd never heard of. Also saw Collins got waived by Portland and Morris Almond by Orlando.

Don't worry guys, only every problem we worried about manifested itself in a really really ugly way tonight. Boozer played like a total puss, there was no interior defense from anybody, Millsap looked overwhelmed against Denver's bigs, the offense got stagnant and no one could hit an open J, and the team folded like a card table as soon as Denver turned up the intensity...aside from D-Will, I wasn't impressed by a single Jazz player tonight. Memo started strong but was a statue on D, Price had feisty moments but got killed by Lawson, AK did some good things but 'Melo got whatever shot he wanted against him...

It wasn't just a bad quarter, it was the manifestation of everything the Jazz have needed to fix but have failed to do anything about in 3 years. Pounding it inside and playing rugby defense isn't good enough anymore, the NBA has evolved into something else, and this team isn't suited for it. I know it's just one game, but already my expectations for this season couldn't be lower.

Yeah, I was thinking last year how we can't have Dwill scoring 30 and handing out 12 assists and then no one else really stepping up. Its great that Dwill can score and pass the ball but we need everyone else to contribute. It was a pretty good game, like you said til Denver turned it up. Those kenyon martin dunks were sick.

Good thing the Jazz are paying $40 million over 4 years for Malik Rose. I mean Carl Landry. I mean Paul Millsap.

But yeah, you pretty much hit it spot on. I thought Fesenko played quite well, though, so as could be expected, he didn't see the floor again. I thought Sloan subbing in Maynor for the last possession of the first half was brilliant, though (sarcasm).

Yeah, I'm really pissed Sloan didn't play Fes in the 4th when Nene and Lawson were crushing us. We could've used his size down the stretch.

Millsap game was almost as bad as Boozer's. Boozer will bounce back and really didn't make too many mistakes. Millsap on the other hand looked like a lost child last night, and the Carmelo dunk was inexcusable.

Is that post for real? Yes I thought he played well. He was the only guy on the god damn team that had a sack and the only one that put up any resistance inside.

And did I say Millsap wasn't good? You'd better be really damned good for a price-tag like that. Just because something is overpriced doesn't mean it's of bad quality.

Yes the game was disturbing. But we need to keep a few things in mind.

1. It's the first game of the season
2. Denver is fucking good, especially at home
3. The Jazz lead the game through 3 quarters, only to falter in the 4th
4. Boozer had an off night, something that rarely happens

Yes, it was ugly. Especially when Denver got rolling. When Melo dunked it in Mansap's face, that signaled the end of the game.

If this game was at ESA i would be a lot more worried.

The sky hasn't fallen. Yet.

Yeah that one dunk was pretty sweet I guess. Other than that, he looked pretty Fez-like to me. I guess he was standing up to K-Mart and Nene better than the rest but that's not saying much.

i'm watching the spurs-bulls game right now, and in the context of last night's game, i am really wishing that tyrus thomas trade had happened this last summer. he has a shot, and he is a paint defender(he just had his third block). less of an offensive monster than boozer, but booz sucked last night anyway.

We'll see about this...it wasn't so rare in those last playoffs, remember. It wasn't so rare all last season, actually. And it's not rare for any embattled player whom everyone in his own town has turned against to submit a stinkbomb season. Really, both the fans and management were anticipating and hoping that Boozer wouldn't be here this season, and most people in this town still openly pine for him to be traded/injured/left in a shallow grave off I-80. Given that he hasn't shown a lot of character against adversity in the past, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he crumbles under the pressure of the whole situation.

my only hope for booz is that he realizes it is a contract season and that he has to play well to "get a raise, regardless."

of course, the flip side to that coin is that he solely goes for stats and couldn't care less about the team. but i think j-slo is the antidote for that. booz got his ass benched in the 3rd last night, and i'd LIKE to think it was for poor defensive effort rather than just going for an NBA record in most shots off the front of the rim.
