Have you guys ever read Kant? He has a very strict idea of morals and good will.. I really like the general idea of good will for it's own sake unattached to any other feelings, ideas, fears or emotions but I feel he gets really wrapped up in the minutia of the things we feel as humans that make us get any reward what so ever for an act of 'good will'..

Anyway.. it's pretty interesting stuff take a gander here... sections 2 and 3 or the most poignant here i think.

LA is the worst shithole on the planet, I chose to live in Utah over California because it suits my personality much more. I'm sure in time you'll find the harrowing vanity of Los Angeles far overpowers the mormon influence over it's brainwashing citizens.

Give it a fucking break man. If you're happy, good. If you're not happy that you feel that your parents lied to you, and your heart is truly shattered because you chose to believe something that you now choose not to, go to a fucking psychologist already.

I find it funny how you sling insults at people for believing in a false religion, but tell me the truth of existence beyond a shadow of a doubt, and THEN you can laugh at other sheep for their silly beliefs. You're just another fucking sheep of a different coat.

I dont miss utah one bit and i would not trade for anything i have in my life right now to ever live in utah again.

If you hate LA, you havent seen the good side of it.

Theres never a dull moment.

Variety... culture, beach, mountains, hikes, bars, restaurants, museums, markets, farmers market, flea markets, all within a few miles. The list goes on...

I'm 100% satisfied and wish I had done this eons ago.

we have a pretty lame culture, shit as beaches, great mountains and hikes. A smattering of bars, a serious lack of museums. A farmers market in the summer.
I wouldnt say we are anything like LA or any other large city man.

LA has insane traffic, 12 dollar beers at bars, mountains that don't compare, half assed farmers markets, long drives to each location, shit as beaches.

I mean you can pick and choose what you like, I would take utah over LA any day, I did.

There are definitely benefits to LA, but it depends on your personality. I like being able to get thai food at 2 a.m. I don't like the non stop name dropping of important, and the culture of shameless self promoters.

In utah I like eating at my favorite thai restaurant until 9 p.m. and I don't like the non stop name dropping of unimportant people.

I understand fully what Utah has to offer and enjoyed every bit that I could. I know I am on a new experience train but Im loving life out here. I wouldnt say it is "better" than Utah it is just different and for where Im at this move was a needed change for what I was looking for. LA has much more to offer for the urban dweller not all good things. But the diversity of Art, music, shops, cafes, restaurants, thrift stores, bars, venues etc etc are so manifold it cant even compare. Of course you are dealing with insane traffic, crime, scenester hawks, plastic wrapped celebrities chasers and the like. LIving out in Santa Barbara there is unbelievable weather, scenery, unmolested well planned city, small shops, laid back atmosphere, Beach after beach after beach, amazing harbor. But it is also like an old money yuppie ocean side town like Park City almost in way. So every place has its ups and downs. For me just a new set of those ups and downs was needed. Being an asthmatic who hates the snow escaping the winter and inversion alone has made it worthwhile honestly.

That being said, I think most cities over 500,000 people *should* have a decent enough variety of culture... i.e. enough choices to make you happy 95% of the time. Sure, SLC doesn't have 50 absolutely awesome bars that you could go to like Chicago or something... but even if you lived in Chicago you'd probably go to your 3-4 favorite bars 90% of the time. Chicago doesn't have the access to outdoors activity other than Lake Michigan, and it costs a bit more to live there. You're not going to find better mexican food than what you can get by the border, you won't find better BBQ than you can get in Texas, better seafood than you can get on the coast, or better Cajun than you can find in Louisiana, but a lot of times you can get pretty close if you're okay with some compromise.

Most places have ups and downs. I think the most important thing is having good friends or family wherever you are, and being happy overall with whatever you are doing, but a decent variety of culture/nature doesn't hurt.

My philosophy.

I was raised in such a small town, there was only one bar and it was all of the towns old alcoholics. They even had a bus to take everyone home at night because they knew where they all lived. I had the most fun in my life with friends there because we didn't have to rely on circumstances to have fun, we would get creative, get a group of awesome people and just go sit by a lake and have the time of our lives. You could be in the coolest city in the world but without good friends its going to such 100x more then the most uncool city in the world where all your friends are at.

I hate when I am talking to people in another state (California) and I tell them Im from Utah, they instantly have bad things to say about it and theres never anything I can say that will change their minds, no matter what they just have this attitude about it without ever even spending time here. They say "you need to move dude" but this is where all the people I love the most are, it would make no sense to leave that just so I can go to bars, farmers markets, concerts or beaches with people I barely know.

just tell them all the preconceived notions of their city that you have... if they're from so cal then they're shallow & have fake boobs, anorexia & overpriced designer clothes, etc... when they disagree then ask why they would assume everyone in UT is how they are saying they are

Well.. yeah everyone's life is different But, some of us happen to have family in California which helps a lot. And helps trigger the move. I'm from the East coast, not Utah and I've seen diversity & culture and it isn't in Utah. SLC doesn't even feel like a city to me, go to NYC, LA, Chicago, or Atlanta and its a real city.

For Crackgrammar to say that the beaches suck here, thats false. Do you like the beaches in Utah? That's horrible. I've seen my fair share of beaches all over and California has some pretty sweet spots if you know where to go.

Farmers market in SLC? It lasts a few months, the ones in CA are year long and are there every single day of the year.

Flea markets? What? I've never seen one in Utah, ever. They are every Saturday or Sunday, depending on which town you go to, all year long. You can find some sweet grabs there.

Thrift shops? The DI in Utah? Cooool...there's probably 10 within a mile from me and probably 500 within 10 miles.

Any type of food you want is in walking distance. You name it and I can find it.

They say the job market is horrible in CA but yet theres SO many places hiring full time. And they pay double or triple here.

Maybe I didnt have strong ties in Utah which made it easier to obviously move but it is what it is. Go where you're happy, Utah wasn't for me but maybe it is for you. I just feel like everyone that was born and raised in Utah hasn't been outside of that bubble as much as they should and they don't realize what they are missing out on. I'm not saying you have to move... but freaking get out of town.

I feel like your being really condescending here, and not knowing the demographics of this board. I'm pretty sure just about everyone on here is a heavy traveler, and has been outside of the state, and quite a few live outside of the state, many living outside of the country whether it have been for a mission, job, or other.

If I were living in utah, it would be because I wanted to be. I may move back there someday, but I loved it when I was there, and hope to make it back at least once a year.

I wasn't trying to direct anything at you, I'm not saying Utah is better then anywhere else. I AM saying the where the people you love are and love you back IS better then anywhere else.

But yeah I think a good portion of people here in Utah don't do a lot of traveling but I am pretty sure they are aware of what they are missing out on and still choose to to stay. I get out of state at least monthly being close to Vegas and occasionally go further out, spent a semester in Europe. There is security in knowing exactly what to expect though, being raised here means you know the ins and outs. I can count over 5 thrift stores in my town and only one is the DI, I have also seen lots of flea markets in Utah county and there are tons of independent farmers camped out in grocery store parking lots and on the side of the road selling the best and cheapest produce you can find.

Also they mat pay a lot more but cost of living is much higher too, there may be lots of jobs open but its still proportionate to the amount of unemployed as it is here. I have been going door to door selling recycling services to people here in St George and about every fifth house is a family moved here from California or Nevada. Even with a lower paying job they have a higher quality of life here and it seems to work for them.

Overall I still just think its a matter of the people you spend your time with and not the location that you spend your time at.

Im not here to bitch and moan.

Whatever works for you (and by you, I mean whoever is reading this)

Utah wasn't meant to be for me. & that's all there is to it. Everyone has different views.

Sometimes I think its also how you are brought up and what you have been surrounded by your whole life. Of course, if every single person you know on this planet lives in Utah or where ever it may be, then it makes sense to stay. I just happen to have siblings and relatives spread out from East to West and I like change.

That is all.

For the record, there are flea markets here, I think the biggest one is on 3500 south near Redwood Road. I've never been, does anyone know what it's like?

Here's a list:

By the way, if the presence of a flea market is making or breaking your opinion of a city, God bless you for being even more broke and cheap than me, I didn't think it could be done.

The problem is that the flea markets in LA aren't cheap, went to one just in December and they were charging a small fee to enter, but ridiculous prices inside. I bought a torn up copy of on the road for 6 dollars. And that was the cheapest book there, looking back I wish I had my 50 cent DI option.

The only reason I didn't buy anything else was because it was so expensive.

I feel like your being really condescending here, and not knowing the demographics of this board. If I were living in utah, it would be because I wanted to be. I may move back there someday, but I loved it when I was there, and hope to make it back at least once a year.

Agree 100%. Few things annoy me more than someone telling me that since I'm from Utah and I like it here (a lot) then I must be naive and I need to travel more so I can see what the rest of the world is like.

Im not jiving on pretty much all of this. Granted I was glad to get out of Utah but not escape it. I just wanted a change of scenery and a status quo shake up. I dont think I will ever live in Utah again but Its not a scorched Earth Wasteland of hicks and MOs like you're painting it to be.

for real... I've been all over the country from LA to Baltimore & I gotta say that Utah has a lot going for it... sure, SLC is small, but it's big enough to feel like a city but small enough that you still know a bunch of people wherever you go... it's clean & crime free, I don't fear walking anywhere at night & that's more than I can say for most other cities I;ve been to... hell, there's parts of Baltimore I wouldn't walk in the day time... I don't see it as 'missing out' on anything... also, you can get to any point in the SLC valley within a 15min car ride... how far can you go in LA in 15mins? it's also mountainous & beautiful!

I will talk shit about Utah, up until an out of towner starts bagging on it. I will then proceed to defend the shit out of it, and convince myself I still like it here.

In all honesty I dislike the rest of the countries perception of Utah, and subsequently their perception of me , more than I dislike Utah itself.
I hate the rep that comes with being from Utah.
Hahaha
That’s so awesome and shallow to say, but it’s the truth.

Whether the perception of Utah by the rest of the planet is fully warranted it is totally thrown out there nonetheless by certain events that are not helping its cause. Imagine growing up in New York, Seattle or Hell Aye or where ever. Your only idea about Utah is going to be Mormons, polygamy, Big freaky Temples, Missionaries, Reddest State in the Union, Osmonds, Elizabeth smarts, Ted Bundy, Odd named basketball team, oh and Red Rocks and Skiing. But really for the most part the actual material touch points that the rest of the Non-Utah world has from Utah are mainly from the Mormon churches Blitz krieg of it. Temples on hills lighting up the night sky, missionaries out everywhere, Franchise looking church houses...Out here I say I am from Utah and it's "Oh yeah polygamy", "Those freaky temples" Those Aryan Wally Clevers on Bicycles" and out in California "Oh yeah the Prop 8 church" The whole state is tagged wrongly from the outset with Mo-Land.... Fittingly Its ignorance of the same flavor and odor of the same kind that exists in some Happy valley enclaves about the world outside Utah. But it is the way the world works in this overloaded day and age

A combo of a selection of the following will make it the top of the "oh yeah" list for most of the banalized aliens living outside planet Utah. Sorry I dont make the rules.

also jello makes a good down the throat lubricant for any object or quivering body part.

I was in Rome at a bar with a bunch of other american students, there were about 3 guys and 10 girls in our group, all from Utah. They treated us like VIPS and the bartender offered everyone a free round. Some dickbag in our group refused, speaking for everyone he says "no we don't drink." the bartender is like, "oh, we can water it down!" And then sweetmo-bro continues saying "no we can't have any we're Mormon." After being there for weeks and having nearly zero Italians ever recognize the name "Utah" this Italian bartender replies "Oh so you can have all these wives but you cant have one drink!?"

I got my free shot BTW.

The only thing I dislike about Salt Lake is that you have to drive 7-10 hours to reach any other decent sized city from here. It would be so much easier as a band or comedian to get out on the road from a place like Seattle where you could start heading south and hit a really nice city every 3-4 hours all the way down to Mexico. Same goes for anywhere back east.

That does kinda suck. However, our "wagon wheel" proximity to major cities (Denver, Boise, Seattle, San Fran, LA, Phoenix) comes in handy. You're only averagely 8 - 10 hours away from most major markets and can return home for short run touring. Whereas if you live in Seattle you have to tour for weeks at a time to be able to hit all the cities you can easily jump to from Utah.
